Health Insurance Obligation

.
.

Everyone who lives in Germany must have health insurance. This rule also applies to you during your exchange stay.

Do you need a visa? Please check the specific health insurance requirements for your visa application.

Enrolment and "Meldung 10"

By German law, you need valid health insurance to enrol at a university. Your insurance must cover the entire semester:

  • Winter semester: September 1 to February 28 or 29
  • Summer semester: March 1 to August 31

For your enrolment, we need the "Meldung 10" (M10). This is an electronic notification from a German statutory health insurance provider. It confirms that you have sufficient insurance coverage.

German Statutory Health Insurance

Statutory health insurance for students costs about 120 euros per month. The costs and services of the different providers are very similar. However, please compare the details yourself.

Are you older than 30 years? Then you cannot use the student tariff. You must choose either a voluntary statutory insurance ("freiwillige Versicherung") or a private health insurance.

Important Notes

Some providers of blocked accounts or global private insurances cooperate with German statutory health insurance providers. Please check carefully which exact insurance is mentioned in your contract.
