FH Human Resources Project / Professor, Worms
Prof. Worms
The “Prof. In Worms” project aims to attract and retain qualified academic staff for Worms University of Applied Sciences. To this end, the university aims to appeal to potential candidates for a HAW professorship by positioning itself as an attractive employer with a strengthened research and knowledge transfer profile, and to support them on their path to a HAW professorship should they require further qualifications. Through new post formats, such as the tandem professorship or the specialised professorship, the role of professor is also to be made more attractive and diverse, thereby contributing to the university’s profile.
In the
long term, Worms University of Applied Sciences aims to sustainably develop and implement the recruitment tools and new qualification pathways for professors tested during the project period.
“Prof. In Worms” is part of the federal-state programme “FH-Personal” (funding code: 03FHP234), which comprises measures to attract and develop professorial staff at universities of applied sciences. This initiative is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Joint Science Conference (GWK) and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The project was launched at Worms University of Applied Sciences in May 2023 and will run until 31 December 2028.
Employer Branding
Employer Branding
As part of its employer branding strategy, Worms University of Applied Sciences aims to raise its profile as an attractive employer for future professors. An information and communication campaign, the optimisation of recruitment processes and the sharpening of the university’s profile are intended to help increase its visibility and highlight the university’s appeal as a place to work and the role of professor as a career option, including as an alternative to a career in the private sector.
Qualification
Qualification
Through various professional development programmes, the university aims to support interested candidates for a professorship so that they can meet all the necessary requirements for a university professorship.
Teaching and research
experience Potential candidates without teaching experience have the opportunity to deliver extracurricular lectures and courses for students as guest lecturers. In addition, interested individuals may participate as guest researchers in the university’s actual research projects in an external advisory or collaborative capacity, without entering into an employment relationship, thereby gaining an insight into the research work carried out by the professors.
Practical professional experience
The ‘tandem professorship’ (Section 56 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act) is designed to enable candidates to gain the non-academic professional experience required for a professorship in cooperation with a company. For a period of up to three years, a private-sector employment contract may be entered into, with the appointee working 50 per cent of their time at the university and 50 per cent at the company.
For newly appointed professors, the university offers support through its professorial mentoring programme, providing guidance from experienced professors as they settle into their new role. For experienced professors interested in taking on research or knowledge transfer activities, there is also the option of professorial mentoring with experienced colleagues from these fields.
Strengthening the university’s profile
In order to sharpen the university’s profile in research and knowledge transfer and to enhance its visibility, priority professorships in research and knowledge transfer are to be introduced and implemented (Section 48(4) of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act (HochSchG RLP)). The resulting reduction in teaching load will give professors more time to devote to research and knowledge transfer activities, enabling them to shape their professorial roles in an even more diverse and personalised manner.
