Pursuing a PhD at Worms University of Applied Sciences
A PhD programme offers the opportunity to engage in-depth and independently with an academic research question over an extended period of time and to make an original contribution to the state of knowledge in the relevant field. At Worms University of Applied Sciences, doctoral studies take the form of a collaborative PhD programme: doctoral candidates are jointly supervised by a professor from Worms University of Applied Sciences and a professor from a partner university authorised to award doctoral degrees, which is the institution that confers the doctoral degree. This model combines the academic expertise of both institutions and enables doctoral research projects that are methodologically sound whilst remaining closely linked to current issues in business, technology and society. Worms University of Applied Sciences supports doctoral candidates through every stage of their research – from initial guidance right through to successful completion.
As a university of applied sciences, Worms University of Applied Sciences offers a research environment characterised by close interaction between academia and industry. PhD students benefit from established partnerships with companies, institutions and partner universities, which open up a wide range of access to empirical data, fields of research and practical contexts. The university’s manageable size facilitates short lines of communication and intensive, personalised supervision by the professors in the Faculties. At the same time, involvement in teaching and research projects offers the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in research and university teaching at an early stage – a valuable foundation for a future academic career, for example with the aim of securing a professorship at a university of applied sciences.
Every PhD project is unique – and our advice is tailored to each individual accordingly. Even before you begin your PhD, we help prospective students explore their PhD options, identify suitable supervisors and partner universities, and develop a viable research topic. As the project progresses, we are available to answer questions regarding the supervision agreement, networking within and outside the university, and the funding of the project. This includes, in particular, advice and support with applying for grants and scholarships. Even during difficult phases of the PhD – such as when facing academic, organisational or personal challenges – we offer confidential advice and work alongside PhD candidates to find solutions.
In addition to subject-specific supervision, Worms University of Applied Sciences is currently developing an interdisciplinary training programme for PhD students. The content is specifically tailored to the needs that arise in the course of doctoral research projects, as well as to the experiences and suggestions of the supervising professors. The result is a programme that provides PhD candidates with tailored support for their academic development – for example, in refining research questions, adhering to standards of good academic practice, or presenting and publishing research findings. In addition, further events and exchange formats are planned, which will provide opportunities for networking and interdisciplinary dialogue.
