Studying Tourism at Worms University of Applied Sciences

By choosing the Bachelor’s degree programme in Tourism and Travel Management, you are opting for a business studies programme with a focus on tourism.

What sets this programme apart:

  • Broad scope: You’ll gain an understanding of the entire tourism value chain, rather than specialising in individual sub-sectors at an early stage. This allows you to remain flexible and set your own priorities as you progress through the programme.
  • Practical application: You’ll apply the knowledge you’ve learnt in case studies and seminars, and gain professional experience during your work placement semester.
  • Future-proof: You’ll lay the foundations for a wide range of specialist and managerial roles in the tourism industry, whilst also meeting the requirements for a subsequent Master’s programme. The 6-semester version of the programme is also available as a work-study programme.

Fancy a semester abroad?

The doors of over 180 partner universities worldwide are open to you. We’ll help you choose the right university and discuss your course choices with you in advance. This will allow you to experience other cultures first-hand and develop your intercultural skills in a targeted way. At some partner universities, it’s also possible to earn a double degree.

Sydney College of Management

Your career prospects

Tourism is a major economic sector and a key employer in Germany. Digitalisation and increasing sustainability requirements are transforming the industry. There is a demand for skilled professionals who can help shape this transformation.

This degree programme prepares you for careers in almost all areas of tourism and transport.

Travel Organisation & Sales

In the travel planning department, you will put together package holidays, coordinating with hotels, airlines and other local partners. You will negotiate terms, calculate prices and ensure that the end result is a well-rounded travel package. In doing so, you will keep an eye on key performance indicators and ensure that the package is commercially viable. In travel sales, you then ensure that the packages reach the right customers, whether in a travel agency, online or via other sales channels.

You’ll be well suited to this role if you enjoy negotiating, keeping an eye on the market and take pleasure in putting together attractive offers.

Event management

Whether it’s a trade fair, a conference or a corporate trip: you plan and organise events from start to finish. This involves booking venues, artists, staff and service providers, obtaining permits and keeping an eye on the budget. During the event, you coordinate all processes and ensure that everything runs smoothly. You work closely with clients.

For this role, you’ll need organisational skills, a passion for teamwork and the ability to keep a cool head, even in stressful situations.

Hotel Management

In the hotel industry, you will take responsibility for the entire operation or specific areas such as reception, housekeeping or catering. You will plan staffing and budgets, ensure guest satisfaction, manage occupancy rates and develop pricing strategies. You will also analyse key performance indicators and determine appropriate actions.

If you enjoy working with people, can keep a cool head even in stressful situations and would like to take on leadership responsibilities, a career in hotel management is the right choice for you.

Regional tourism development

Tourist destinations need people who know their strengths and promote them to the wider world. They market regions, towns and countries both at home and abroad, develop offers for visitors and support local businesses. Their aim is to make a holiday destination attractive to travellers whilst safeguarding the interests of all those involved. To this end, you maintain relationships with public authorities, local councils, the retail sector, the hotel industry and the hospitality sector. Interaction with other tourism service providers is also part of your day-to-day work.

Diplomatic skills and strong communication skills are essential in this profession. An interest in political contexts is an advantage.

Mode of transport management

Mobility is a key part of the tourism industry and an exciting career path. You’ll work for airlines, railways, coach operators, cruise lines or car hire companies. Your responsibilities range from planning routes and capacity, through to pricing, and collaborating with tour operators and sales partners.

With a flair for logistics, economic principles and figures, this is the perfect field for you.

Business Travel Management

Within organisations, clear structures ensure that business travel runs smoothly. In business travel management, you organise trips for companies and ensure that staff travel safely, efficiently and within budget. In this role, you plan processes, develop travel policies and liaise with service providers. You may work either for specialist business travel agencies or directly within a company’s travel management department.

As well as organisational skills and a structured approach to work, negotiation skills when dealing with airlines, rail operators and hotels, as well as a keen awareness of costs, will also be of great help to you.

Course content

The course structure is clearly organised. At the start, you will learn the fundamentals, such as general business administration and marketing. From the very beginning, you will also study foreign languages as well as intercultural and sustainability-focused topics.

As the programme progresses, you will gradually deepen your knowledge and explore specific areas of tourism and transport in greater depth, including:

  • Tour operator and travel distribution management
  • Transport mode management
  • Regional tourism development
  • Hotel management
  • Business travel management
  • Event Management

In the fourth semester, you will gain at least 20 weeks’ practical experience during a work placement – either in Germany or abroad. Many students subsequently write their Bachelor’s thesis in collaboration with the organisation where they undertook their placement, or go straight into professional life there.

From the fifth semester onwards, your seminars will take on a more research- and practice-oriented focus. You will apply your knowledge to critically analyse issues relating to tourism. In the final semester, you will undertake a dedicated module focusing on the specific challenges of digitalisation in the tourism sector.

Optionally, you can spend a semester abroad in the sixth semester. If you decide against this, you will study for six semesters instead of seven and graduate with a total of 180 ECTS credits.
