The Care Leave and Family Care Leave Act
The Care Leave Act provides for a legal entitlement to full or partial leave from work for the purpose of providing home care, support and assistance to a close relative.
- Up to 10 days’ leave in the event of a short-term inability to work due to an acute situation (“care support allowance”)
- Up to six months’ partial or full leave to care for a relative in need of care in a home setting (“care leave”)
- Up to three months’ partial or full leave to support a relative in need of care at home or in a hospice during the final stages of life
- Up to 24 months’ leave, subject to a minimum working time of 15 hours per week, to care for a relative in need of care at home (see the “Family Care Leave Act”)
The term “close relative” has been extended to include, amongst others, life partners, as well as adopted children, foster children and/or stepchildren.
