Networks & Security

In the Networks & Security specialisation, you will gain an in-depth understanding of key topics in computer science relating to distributed systems, networks and IT security.

You will learn to analyse, plan and evaluate high-performance and secure distributed systems. This covers network infrastructure as well as complex communication scenarios.

The focus is on network protocols, the behaviour of systems under load, security risks and protection mechanisms. You will learn how to operate distributed systems and networks reliably, efficiently and securely.

Analytical. Safety-focused. System-oriented.

Networks & Security embodies the interplay of performance, reliability and security in highly networked systems.

The focus is on three areas:

  • analysing and sizing distributed systems
  • Evaluating and optimising network performance
  • Securing networked systems and IoT environments

You combine network technologies with IT security and distributed systems. In doing so, you take into account technical limitations, performance requirements and current threats.

Here’s what you can expect

You will develop knowledge in the following areas:

  • Distributed systems: You will explore the concepts, characteristics and limitations of distributed systems.
  • Network performance: You will measure, analyse and optimise network performance.
  • Network protocols: You will learn how they work and the areas in which they are used.
  • Queueing theory and network calculus: You will use analytical methods to analyse networks.
  • High availability: You will examine failover, replication and the migration of virtual machines.
  • IT security of distributed systems: You will learn about protection mechanisms and attack models.
  • Security in IoT and CPS environments: You will explore the security of networked devices and cyber-physical systems.
  • Incident response and digital forensics: You will deal with responding to security incidents and investigating digital traces.
