Secure prospects

The dual study programme in Air Traffic Management leads you straight into a role in the control tower or air traffic control centre as an air traffic controller with our partner, DFS. But your career path is far from over there. Experienced air traffic controllers often go on to take on more senior roles, such as supervisors, trainers for the next generation, or positions in specialised areas within DFS. In principle, any air traffic controller can follow this career path. However, those who have also completed a degree often find themselves in a particularly strong position to do so.

Air traffic controller

Air traffic controllers guide aircraft safely through German airspace. To do this, they are in constant contact with pilots and issue clear instructions regarding heading, altitude and speed. They work in a control centre or an air traffic control tower.

The job requires them to keep a clear overview even in stressful situations and to make the right decisions quickly. Good hearing and eyesight, as well as a sound command of English and German, are also essential.

Supervisor

If you’d like to take the lead whilst operations are underway, the role of supervisor is just right for you. You’ll take charge of a shift for a team of air traffic controllers, keep an eye on all traffic and allocate tasks within the team.

In exceptional situations, you’ll step in to provide support and act as the first point of contact for your team. A prerequisite for this role is professional experience as an air traffic controller. In this position, you’ll draw on your organisational skills, strong communication skills and ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations on a daily basis.

Operational Performance and Development

Day-to-day operations require a solid foundation behind the scenes. This is precisely what you ensure in the Operational Performance & Development department.

You will plan staff deployment for operational services and manage the operational project portfolio. You will also collect and process air traffic data and make it available to the relevant departments.

You’ll be well suited to this role if you enjoy planning, keeping track of several projects at once and working with data in a structured way.

Business Development

Major changes within a company require thorough preparation. In the field of corporate development, you will draw up decision-making frameworks and analyses for the executive board and senior management of DFS.

You will lead and develop projects relating to strategy, processes and organisation, advise managers and staff on their implementation, and also support the subsidiaries of the DFS Group.

This role is a good fit for you if you enjoy conceptual work, structuring complex issues and advising others persuasively.

Course content

Over the course of six semesters, you will alternate between Worms University of Applied Sciences and the Air Traffic Control Academy in Langen.

  • Semesters 1 to 3: Whilst studying at Worms University of Applied Sciences, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the air transport system as a whole. This is supported by joint modules with our other air transport degree programmes, enabling networking between students from different areas of the air transport sector. During the lecture-free period, you will work in the commercial department of DFS.
  • From the 4th semester onwards: Initial training begins – the first part of your air traffic controller training. At the same time, you will attend an in-depth seminar on air traffic topics at the university.
  • By the end of the fifth semester: You will complete the Initial Training and be awarded the air traffic controller trainee licence (Student Licence).
  • 6th semester: You will write your bachelor’s thesis and complete Unit Training, a practical work placement at local DFS branches.
