Bachelor’s degree including a commercial pilot’s licence

The cooperative Bachelor’s degree programme in Aviation Management and Piloting was the first of its kind to be accredited in Germany. Worms University of Applied Sciences has been offering the programme for over ten years. It combines a business studies course in aviation management with the acquisition of a commercial pilot’s licence.

What you can expect:

  • A dual qualification for better career prospects: You will simultaneously obtain an Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) and a Bachelor of Science degree. This opens up two career paths for you: as a pilot and in aviation management.
  • Flight training with a strong partner: For flight training, we collaborate with the European Institute of Aviation and Business gGmbH (EIAB).
  • State-of-the-art technology in the cockpit: You will fly aircraft with glass cockpits and train on modern simulators, just as you would in your future professional life.
  • Financial security: As a not-for-profit organisation, EIAB gGmbH manages the funds for your flight training.

Your career prospects

The Bachelor’s degree programme prepares you for a career as a professional pilot. With an ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence), you are authorised to fly aeroplanes or helicopters commercially as the pilot in command. This also applies to aircraft which, according to their certification, require a two-person crew.

You will also be qualified for management roles within an airline or other aviation companies and organisations. Furthermore, after completing your Bachelor’s degree, you can embark on a suitable, consecutive Master’s programme.

The aviation industry is dynamic, and life plans change. By combining an ATPL with a degree in Business Administration, you keep all options open for later stages of your career, allowing you to reduce your time in the cockpit flexibly. In fleet management, HR management for flight crew or project management within airline operations, you can seamlessly transition into highly qualified ground-based roles without giving up your passion for flying. This also means you are well prepared in the event of a loss of medical fitness to fly.

The following examples illustrate some possible career paths within the aviation industry.

Airline Management & Flight Operations

In cross-functional roles such as fleet operations planning, crew resource management or the training department, you ensure the safe and smooth running of an airline’s flight operations. Thanks to your ATPL, you have a sound understanding of aviation practice. Your business management expertise helps you to design complex operations and training schedules in a cost-effective and efficient manner. You can often combine these roles with your (reduced) working hours in the cockpit.

Business Aviation Management

In business aviation, you often find yourself working in both the cockpit and the office at the same time. As a client advisor in the jet charter sector, you manage sales, coordinate crew rota planning or optimise the operating costs of the private jet fleet.

Helicopter Flight Operations and Management

As a flight operations manager or safety manager, you will coordinate the operations of your fleet or plan complex missions. In doing so, you will keep a close eye on both operational and commercial considerations. You can often combine these duties with your (reduced) working hours in the cockpit.

Public Sector & Consultancy

Your dual qualifications are also in demand outside the airline sector, for example with regulatory authorities or in aviation consultancy. As an aviation consultant or safety auditor, you will assess operational processes from both a flight operations and a business management perspective. You will help shape the regulatory framework and ensure that safety and cost-effectiveness go hand in hand in the airspace.

Course content

At Worms University of Applied Sciences, you will first learn the fundamentals of business administration. Building on this, you will deepen your knowledge of aviation management. To complete the programme, you will write your Bachelor’s thesis on a topic from one of these areas. In the first part of the programme, lectures and seminars are mainly held in German; later on, the language of instruction switches predominantly to English.

At the same time, you will undertake flight training to obtain a commercial pilot’s licence, the content of which is based on the guidelines of the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). With more than 100 hours of flight time under instrument flight rules, both in an aeroplane and in a simulator, you will gain significantly more flying experience than in a standard integrated training programme.

Worms University of Applied Sciences and EIAB closely coordinate course content, administration and study locations. Dedicated contact persons will support you throughout your entire course of study.
