Is your child under 12* and unwell, and are you therefore unable to work? If so, you can report this as ‘child illness’ to the HR department. Please notify us of the (expected) days of absence and submit a copy of your child’s medical certificate. SG 1 will report your absence to the State Office for Finance. Employees will not receive their salary for these days; instead, after applying for child sickness benefit, they will be reimbursed a proportion of their lost earnings by their statutory health insurance provider, usually 90 per cent of the lost net pay. The so-called ‘medical certificate for claiming sickness benefit in the event of a child’s illness’ must be submitted to the health insurance provider.
Please note that, depending on the scope of cover, no child sickness benefit is paid for privately insured children, or different rules may apply. Please check with your private health insurer regarding your individual terms and conditions.
The website of the Federal Ministry of Health provides answers to the most important questions regarding sick days for children and child sickness benefit.
*There is no age limit for children with disabilities who require assistance.
