Expanding expertise: Interdisciplinary skills for the future

In professional life, more than just specialist knowledge counts – those who think outside the box, think in a networked way and understand the customer's perspective have clear advantages.

Whether in IT, business or in the field of tourism and transport – interdisciplinary skills are in demand!

Technologies must be applied, tested and optimised across industries. At the same time, IT and interface skills are essential for business-oriented professions – from artificial intelligence, cloud technologies and business intelligence to sustainability, mobility and digital transformation.

Those who think in a networked way remain fit for the future.

So: expand your specialist knowledge, gain new perspectives and play an active role in shaping the future

New option in the elective subject area

In order to enable you to expand your specialist knowledge at Worms University of Applied Sciences, our three departments have jointly created a flexible framework. This allows you to take modules from other degree programmes within the specified elective area and expand your knowledge in an interdisciplinary manner. Depending on the department and/or field of study, there are general or individual regulations set by the relevant examination board.

The first students will be able to take advantage of this new opportunity as early as the 2025 summer semester.

This page provides centralised information about the applicable regulations.

For students of tourism/transportation

  • Start of the winter semester 2025/2026

Planning tips: Rules to follow!

Organisational information:

  1. When participating in interdisciplinary modules, it cannot be guaranteed that lecture and examination dates will not clash with other courses. Participants are aware of this risk associated with the flexibility gained. They should plan their participation in interdisciplinary courses and examinations well in advance and coordinate these independently and on their own responsibility.
  2. Important: The registration and deregistration deadlines are based on the regulations of the teaching unit offering the respective module. This means that if, for example, you are enrolled in the Applied Computer Science programme but are taking a module from the Global Trade Management programme, you must observe the registration deadlines applicable there

    Rules for interdisciplinary exchange

  3. Bachelor's students can only take interdisciplinary elective modules from other Bachelor's programmes. Master's students can only take Master's modules. Continuing education programmes, e.g. from a fee-based MBA programme or central continuing education courses, are generally excluded.
  4. An interdisciplinary elective subject will therefore not be recognised as a credit in your own degree programme if its content, the skills to be acquired and its scope essentially correspond to a module in your own degree programme. In cases of doubt, your own examination board will decide on equivalence. However, attending interdisciplinary advanced/in-depth courses is strongly recommended.
  5. Even if it is possible in principle to participate in modules from another degree programme, lecturers or programme coordinators may refuse participation, e.g. if special admission requirements must be met or the course is already fully booked. It is therefore generally advisable to briefly inform the lecturers at the first class and ask to participate (this does no harm and is a good start ;-) ).
  6. If the number of SWS or ECTS credits differs between the elective module in your own degree programme and the desired interdisciplinary elective module (from another participating degree programme), a deviation of ± 1 SWS or ± 1 ECTS is permitted. In this case, the interdisciplinary elective module will be included in the study plan and later in the transcript with the SWS/ECTS of your own degree programme.

    Example:
A student of Applied Computer Science (Bachelor) requires a WPF with 4 SWS or 6 ECTS according to the examination regulations and would like to take, for example, ‘Investment & Financing’ from one of the IBA Bachelor's degree programmes with 5 ECTS or 3 SWS. This would be acceptable under this regulation and would be entered in the computer science degree programme with 6 ECTS or 4 SWS as an elective compulsory subject (as provided for in the registered examination regulations). Reason: The difference of ± 1 SWS or ± 1 ECTS is reasonable in order to enable interdisciplinary exchange despite different examination regulations. Similarly, a higher learning effort is to be expected when participating in a subject outside one's field of study, especially since the examination will not be adapted for participants from other disciplines. Interdisciplinary elective subjects should complement the modules of your own degree programme.
