AI-enabled Safe Aging for a Pandemic-Resilient Digital Infrastructure

The rapid development of new technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT) means that an increasing number of capabilities are being integrated into IoT devices. The corona pandemic in particular has strongly promoted digitization and thus the spread of IoT devices. As the capabilities of the IoT and the processing of sensitive data increase, IT security must be integrated into IoT systems again and again. The Covid-19 pandemic in particular is changing everyday working conditions for many people. Working from home means that secure home networks are becoming increasingly important for the digital infrastructure.

While large and complex firewalls can often offer a second level of security for IoT devices in company networks, most home networks are less well secured. Instead, users must rely on the security of the IoT devices themselves. The more these devices age, the more attacks on old equipment are possible. This fact is highly problematic, since with increasing age, the computing power and memory of old devices no longer meet current requirements, they no longer support new protocol versions, use old software libraries, or patches are no longer provided by the manufacturers. As a result, there is an ever-increasing problem in securing such systems. This is where the funded project comes in and wants to develop new solutions.
